Release Date: March 2009
It came through as any other enquiry would – a few standard questions about a plastic card printer and a card embosser followed by a request to purchase the embosser. But when the customer couldn’t produce a physical address to courier the goods to, the ID Warehouse sales representative taking the call immediately knew that something wasn’t quite right…
As suppliers of security card printers and consumables, ID Warehouse are at the frontline of fighting fraud in the community. ID Warehouse Managing Director, Desiree Heath says that the company takes their job very seriously, “I daresay we’ve stopped countless acts of ID theft and credit card fraud.”
ID Warehouse has been an industry leader for over 15 years and what has been most alarming recently is how readily available security products have become.
“We believe that as distributors of security products and consultants to the industry we all have a duty of care which the industry professionals take very seriously,” adds Desiree. But there are rogue individuals, suspect international online stores and those new to the industry who don’t understand the repercussions of selling a card printer to an individual without doing the appropriate checks.
Right now there could be a terrorist cell printing ID cards in preparation for an attack, a teenager printing fake licenses to sell to mates or fraudulent ID cards being produced for a government organisation.
Having plenty of experience with this type of fraud, ID Warehouse have some strict procedures in place. These include taking a consultative approach to each enquiry, training staff to identify potential indiscretions and a register to log all purchases of security equipment. The company also has a strong relationship with the NSW Police Fraud Squad and industry alliances with ASIAL.
The inquiry mentioned at the start of this article came in the morning on Friday, 27th February 2009. The ‘clients’ were creative yet thorough in their story, claiming they were a recruitment agency that needed to make loyalty cards and that they already had a card printer. After doing some quick internet checks which failed to yield any concrete businesses or people with the names they gave, ID Warehouse requested a copy of a credit card and a driver’s licence to prove identity.
Both were promptly faxed and the card carriers bank was contacted to see if the funds were available – which they were. “But when we passed the faxes onto the NSW Police Fraud Squad we weren’t surprised with the response” says Desiree, “the drivers licence was a fake made to match the credit card which was stolen!”
Once it was established that they were dealing with dubious clients, IDW Technologies then asked the clients to pick up the products from their warehouse under the pretence of showing them how the machines worked – but with the real intention of capturing their faces on CCTV.
“It’s no surprise that they didn’t turn up, we didn’t really expect them too” adds Desiree. “But, we can rest assured knowing that this is the second time in the last 4 weeks that ID Warehouse has thwarted the plans of a would-be ID or Credit Card con!”
Note: The incident mentioned in this press release is factual and did occur as specified. The NSW Police Fraud Squad are in the process of conducting their own investigation which ID Warehouse is fully cooperating with.
